Vince's last flight

When Vince McNabb passed away on the 31st May 2001, he requested in this will that his ashes be scattered from the air over the place where he had spent so many happy hours, the Wairarapa Model Aero Club's flying field at Hood Aerodrome.

Vince's wish was fulfilled on Saturday afternoon of the 16th February 2002. The weather had been poor for several days but fortunately it cleared up after lunch.

By 3 o'clock many of the club members and Vince's family had gathered at the airfield.

Club President Stan Belworthy flying his Agricola did the honors, and Vince's last wish was accomplished. We all had a glass of Champagne and toasted our old friend in farewell.

Vince was a member of WMAC for about thirty years and in that time he built some thirty nine models - plus one he was working on at the time of his death, which I was privileged to complete. He was a friendly and generous man, interested in many things, of an enquiring mind and a book lover.

He left all his models, workshop equipment and a lifetime's collection of motors, radio gear etc. to the club he had served as treasurer for many years. A very generous gesture.

Vince flew for the last time, about a week before he died, doing what he loved - landed his model and collapsed on the field. He is greatly missed by all club members.

Happy landings Vince, I get the feeling you are keeping a watchful eye on our activities below.

- Harry Hainsworth
